The tone was set for this match when Bernard Lopes soared to open the scoring with an authoritative header from a Leon Clinton corner after just 4 minutes. With only 5 matches remaining, we are now in the finishing straight for the League Championship and it was important for Lincoln to not only win but, if possible, score enough goals to give them the “extra point” which could come into play if goal difference is necessary to decide the league at the end of the season.
Europa Point put up a brave fight in the blustery conditions. Indeed they could have equalised had it not been for an important intervention from Raul Navas with the Europa Point striker clean through on goal after a defensive error. Lincoln loanee Jaylan Hankins was meanwhile pulling off a string of excellent saves for Europa Point in the opening 30 minutes. He could do nothing however to stop Clinton and George Cabrera adding to the Lincoln tally to make the score 3-0 at the break.
Yeray replaced Calderon for the second half as Lincoln came out looking for further goals. With the Europa Point team tiring visibly they were able to add to the total through Lee Casciaro (57th minute) after a long Joseph Chipolina throw-in from the left and another strike from Cabrera after 59 minutes which rocketed into the roof of the net from 12 yards. Clinton then took over on the scoring front adding in the 65th and 70th minute to complete his hat-trick. Lee was then replaced by Tulio who was making his first appearance since picking up a knee injury on February 12th. Tulio quickly got himself onto the score sheet with strikes in the 73rd and 75th minute, the second a beautifully judged scoop over the onrushing Hankins.
Hankins continued to defy the Lincoln forwards with a tremendous 90 minute goalkeeping performance of which he can be proud.
All in all, a good result and team performance from Lincoln and mission accomplished – 3 points and a big improvement in goal difference which now stands at +76.
“Imps move four points clear at the top with four games remaining.”
