Lincoln won their final game of the league season with a narrow 1-0 victory over a super-motivated St Josephs team. The pressure was definitely on Lincoln as they needed to win this match in order to put pressure on Europa to win their final match also in order to secure the league title.
Lincoln started at a high tempo which led to early pressure on the St Joseph’s defence. The Lincoln forward line of Tulio (in for the suspended Lee Casciaro), Bardon, Diego and Kyle Casciaro was creating plenty of space and the territorial advantage paid off after 8 minutes when Kyle Casciaro volleyed home a cross from the right by Yeray.
The match then turned into more of a midfield battle with possession being equally shared by both teams and few chances being created.
The match continued in the same vein in the second half with both teams largely cancelling each other out. Tulio was replaced by Leon Clinton to lead the line, and Ryan Casciaro came on for Calderon with Lincoln reverting to a 5 man defence for the last 20 minutes with St Joseph’s pressing harder as the match reached its conclusion.
From a corner, St Joseph’s created their best chance to score with Raul Navas pulling off a wonderful one-handed save to deny them an equaliser. There was one last opportunity created by Dean Torrilla for Kyle, but unfortunately this one also went begging.
The match finished 1-0 to Lincoln.
Unfortunately it proved to be insufficient as Europa won their match against Glacis the next day. We warmly congratulate Europa on their successful league campaign. They have proved to be the more consistent team over the course of the season and the league table never lies.
We now look forward to the season finale next Sunday when we play Europa in the Gibtelecom Rock Cup Final at 19.00.
